Macdonald Campus

The Macdonald campus was purpose-built as the Macdonald College in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the largest Canadian agricultural college of its day and one of the most modern in the world. The beautifully landscaped campus features historic buildings and a total of 650 hectares (1,600 acres) of green space: the largest on the island of Montreal. In addition to its wide lawns and quiet shoreline, the property includes cultivated fields, orchards, a working dairy farm, protected woodlands and marshes, and even a vineyard of hardy and experimental grape varieties.

Effectively a community in its own right, the Campus supplies power to its buildings and the campus farm provides all of the eggs consumed in McGill’s dining halls. Locally sourced ingredients (much of which come from the campus’s market garden) make up 50 – 75% of the food served on both campuses in summer and fall.
