Studies show that poor oral health can have severe repercussions on overall wellness. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints and lack of insurance, many of Montreal’s disadvantaged never have the opportunity to see a dentist. McGill’s Faculty of Dentistry, in collaboration with community organizations, works to tackle this issue by offering free dental services to those in need.
For almost two decades, the Faculty’s Mobile Dental Clinic has travelled to communities across the Montreal region to provide basic dental care to over 300 patients annually. In 2011, they took it a step further, joining forces with Welcome Hall Mission to add a satellite clinic to the program. The Jim Lund Clinic—Montreal’s first permanent, free dental care clinic—provides low-income families, homeless men and women, and new immigrants enrolled at the Welcome Mission Hall shelter with access to services that would otherwise be out of reach.
