McGill has been ranked 73rd out of 2,500 universities worldwide by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). Compiled by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, the annual list is considered one of the pre-eminent global rankings of universities based on research metrics.

ARWU uses several academic or research performance indicators to rate world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; the number of highly cited researchers; the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science; papers indexed in major citation indices; and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

McGill was particularly strong in the Alumni category, which tabulates the number of alumni who have won Nobel Prizes or Field Prizes. The University ranked first among Canadian institutions.

Earlier this summer, Shanghai Consultancy released its annual Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022. Twenty-three subjects taught at McGill were ranked in the top 100 in the world, including five in the top 50. Released on July 19, the list ranks universities in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. In total, more than 5,000 universities in 96 countries and regions were ranked.

McGill’s top-ranked subjects include:

  • Public Health (21st)
  • Geography (29th)
  • Dentistry and Oral Health (38th)
  • Mining & Mineral Engineering (40th)
  • Human Biological Sciences (42nd)

In June, the QS World University Rankings rated McGill as Canada’s top university and 31st in the world.
